The World Federation for Medical Education (WFME) is an international organization that promotes quality standards in medical education, covering both undergraduate and postgraduate training. Its primary goal is to enhance medical education worldwide through accreditation and guidelines, ensuring uniformity and adherence to high-quality standards at the international level.
In 2024, ANVUR achieved WFME accreditation, recognizing its commitment to excellence in medical education assessment and accreditation.

The WFME accreditation, valid for ten years, is a crucial requirement for medical graduates in Italy to access medical residency programmes in the United States. It is one of the key requirements set by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG), the organisation that allows international graduates to take the exams required to obtain the ECFMG Certification, which is essential for practicing medicine in the U.S.
The World Federation for Medical Education (WFME) is committed to developing global standards for medical education, providing a framework for curriculum design, evaluation, and accreditation of medical institutions. These standards ensure compliance with minimum quality requirements while also promoting continuous improvement.
Accreditation by WFME guarantees that medical schools' programmes are aligned with the highest international training standards. It serves as a globally recognised quality mark, confirming universities' commitment to excellence in medical education. Additionally, it enhances the international attractiveness of Italian medical programmes, making them more appealing to foreign students.
ANVUR applied for WFME accreditation in 2022 and successfully obtained it on 28 March 2024.
