For the purpose of journal classification, ANVUR has established a specific Regulation. The Agency relies on the work of a Working Group (WG), tasked with formulating a judgement on the applications, based on an in-depth examination of the submitted materials.
According to the Regulation, the Agency also conducts, on a periodic basis and with the support of the GdL, a review of the continued compliance with the classification criteria for scientific journals already included in the official lists.
The main phases of the evaluation procedure are as follows:
- Submission of classification applications by scientific journals or interested researchers
- Preliminary assessment by the WG appointed by ANVUR, leading to the initial evaluation
- Possible counter-arguments submitted by the applicant
- Proposal of a final evaluation by the WG
- Final decision by the ANVUR Governing Board, with the outcome communicated to the applicant
- Publication of the lists of scientific journals and class A journals, in accordance with ANVUR’s evaluation

The latest Regulation for the evaluation of journals adopted by the Agency was approved in 2023.
