The accreditation process for PhD programmes in the 40th Cycle (XL Ciclo) involved 1,235 programmes, including 96 Industrial PhD programmes and 43 National PhD programmes.

Of the 1,235 accredited programmes:

• 503 are administered by universities located in northern regions,
• 350 are based in central regions,
• 360 are in southern regions.

Additionally, 20 programmes are offered by telematic universities, and 2 by institutions authorized to issue qualifications equivalent to a PhD, pursuant to Article 74 of Presidential Decree No. 382 of July 11, 1980.
